This week, we celebrated the opening of New York Roots, our new public art installation featuring the monumental steel sculptures of renowned artist Steve Tobin, Councilmember Erik Bottcher and DOT Deputy Commissioner Sta. Ines joined us for the event.

Stretching across the Broadway plazas from 39th street to 41st Street, New York Roots transforms a stroll through the Garment District into a moment of reflection. These seven towering sculptures, inspired by the strength and interconnectedness of root systems, celebrate the invisible bonds of family, community, and resilience that hold us all together.

Steve Tobin is no stranger to big ideas or big materials. With a background in theoretical math and physics, his work blends scientific thinking with artistry, often working in steel, bronze, glass, and stone.

Part of the Garment District Art on the Plazas program, New York Roots will be on display through February 2026.

This is all made possible thanks to our partners at NYC DOT Art, who work with us to present new and enriching public art on our plazas, all year round.Photos are by Alexandre Ayer of Diversity Pics.
